History Has Its Mysteries

Writers of mysteries have only to look back in history to find inspiration. Just a hint of a mystery is enough to get a writer started with, what if…

From its earliest days, America has had its share of real life mysteries. In fact, a Puritan leader, John Winthrop, one of the founders of Boston, Massachusetts, reported seeing a UFO. This is recorded in Mr. Winthrop’s journal.

Some mysteries are a matter of history; for example, the disappearance of “the lost colony of Roanoke, Virginia.” Throughout our history, various unexplained happenings are recorded and remain unsolved. Think about those mysteries that have never been recorded, those things people have not talked about for fear of being ridiculed. And, from there, a writer has her springboard to what if.

Being fascinated with history, I, of course, went to it for inspiration for the third and fourth Darcy and Flora cozy mysteries. Best Left Buried and Grave Heritage could not have been written without delving into the past.

Do you know some real life mysteries? Can you imagine satisfactory conclusions to these mysteries or would you prefer keeping them unsolved, a fascinating happening that is best left buried?
