Walkin’ Through the Leaves, Gettin’ Really Cold

Walkin’ Through the Leaves, Gettin’ Really Cold

For those of us old enough to remember Johnny Ray’s song, Walkin’ in the Rain, this morning we could sing, Walkin’ Through the Leaves. There’s not much wind, just a bit, but leaves are falling like rain because last night, the thermometer sank really low! It’s only about twenty degrees now and the mercury was lower than that earlier. My white mulberry, whose leaves are still mostly green, dropped about half of them last night and continues to lose them this morning. So, that’s the ballad of the leaves. If we have snow Monday, I’ll think that indeed fall’s visit was very short this year.

Yesterday, the day being nippy and calling for a fireplace and a warm kitchen, I decided to try my hand at making cheese straws. I’ve been reading and enjoying Ann B. Ross’ Miss Julia books and she mentions serving cheese straws often. So, I found a recipe and started cooking. They are simple and good but mine would have done better if I’d rolled them thinner and cut them out skinnier. They would go well with soup. I’m thinking potato soup or tomato soup.

Today would have been my parents’ anniversary. They were married in 1922 and spent sixty-six years together before Dad passed away. I’ll ever be grateful for my parents and am thankful that, out of all the parents in the world, God gave me these two.

Tomorrow is Veterans’ Day or, as it used to be called, Armistice Day. World War I was the war to end all wars. I only wish it could have been. So many brave men and women died during this time and in the wars after. But, we keep hoping and praying for world peace, for an end to bitterness and greediness, hatred, misunderstandings and despotism. Hope springs eternal, doesn’t it?

Wherever you are this morning, in sunny climes or much farther north, I hope your Saturday is peaceful and pleasant. Remember A cozy a day keeps the blues away. And that is truth in a nutshell.
