Looking Into the Face of Evil

Looking Into the Face of Evil

Evil lived in the heart of someone in Ednalee. What does the face of evil look like, Ned wondered. Among those smiling faces at the luncheon, did a friendly countenance hide a dark heart? Was someone planning Bessiebelle’s death before the luncheon or did something there spur the murder? Did Bessiebelle herself bring on her own demise? What had she said? Did someone feel threatened? Was there a secret that must not be told and Bessiebelle was threatening to bring it to light?

Ned had no idea that murder lurked nearby when Greta talked her into having that luncheon. If it had not been held at her house, would Bessiebelle still be alive? Was there something about the house Uncle Javin bequeathed her that was, in itself, evil?

Shaking her head slightly, Ned went to the kitchen. Maybe a cup of hot tea laced with honey would calm her enough to think clearly. Her mind swirled with what-ifs and maybes. The point was, Bessiebelle was dead and no amount of trying to re-live events leading up to her death would change things. But a feeling of unease, a fear of the unknown hung over her. If the killer had felt threatened, did that threat leave with the murder of Bessiebelle?

Sitting down at the kitchen table with her tea, Ned stared out the window at the moonlight bathing the old well in shimmering silver. Why had Bessiebelle died and who had killed her? Did the smiling face of one of her friends mask a wicked heart? Was she in danger simply by living in this Victorian house? What did the face of evil look like?
