Journal of a Rainy Season

Journal of a Rainy Season

6:22 p.m. Friday. Maybe we’ve gone into a rainy season. I am looking out of my window at raindrops dancing, bouncing, and pelting the street. This is wonderful because we’ve badly needed rain. Maybe it will extinguish the wildfires that have been all around us. It seemed like a perfect day for baking, so, bake I did. Chocolate chip cookies and strawberry and cream muffins filled the house with a lot of good smells. And, by the way, the cookies and muffins tasted great too. Delicious. Nathan appreciated the cookies. Chocolate chip is his favorite.

Baking from scratch is one of my favorite ways to relax. And, on a dark, rainy day, something hot and flavorful straight from the oven tends to cheer things up.

6:00 a.m. Saturday. Thunder grumbles in the damp darkness, coming every closer. Nemo paces from dining room to front room where I’m typing. He looks anxiously up at me. Are we going to have a storm? Does he feel a tingle in his toes? Does the thunder remind him that something unseen and unfriendly may be waiting for him outside in the dark morning?

Before the rain started yesterday, my trusty camera and I took a couple of pictures. I’m always happy to see my lilac bush start to bloom. Lilacs remind me of my mom. They were her favorite flower. I broke off a sprig and brought it into the house. Its fragrance is the essence of springtime.

Coffee and a visit with friends is a grand way to start the morning. Rain makes it even better. I hope your day holds bunches of spring flowers and a bushel full of your favorite things.
