What Is That Song I Hear?

What Is That Song I Hear?

As times change–fashions, cars, viewpoints, so does music. Music and rhythm are at the core of our very existence. Think about it–the rhythm of days and night, of seasons, the weather. Even the way we walk and talk has a certain rhythm and every voice has some sort of musical quality.

I’ve read that when God created everything, there was music in the stars and the planets. Certainly, there’s a decided cadence in the orbits of celestial bodies. And, we humans? Well, I believe we have music in our souls. Depending upon our childhoods and circumstances and sometimes the way we are treated, that music is either augmented or muffled. And, then our own view of life–that determines the songs we sing or play or listen to.

Why was there an era of great composers and there haven’t been any since to match these masters–Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Brahms, and others. Why was there an era of master artists? And yes, art reflects music–its rhythm and beauty and the emotions it evokes. I don’t know the answer to these questions, but each generation has always had its musicians and artists–maybe it is changing world viewpoint that is reflected in art.

I like the music of the big band era. It has an upbeat cadence–you could really tap your toes to it. My son played that type of music with a couple of bands and I enjoy listening to the CDs they made–makes for a happier day.

It seems to me that nothing reflects the change in music as much as church music. That’s well and good–modern songs are more meaningful to the younger generation, I’m sure, but I, who am not of the younger generation, miss the hymns I grew up with. They had a message that was like a sermon set to music.

This morning, I listened to a video of falling rain–a soothing, relaxing sound and yes, I’d say there is music in it. Remember the song, Listen to the Rhythm of the Falling Rain? (Now, that song will be stuck in my head for hours.) And, come to think of it, that’s not bad. It has a nice beat to it too.

Begin the day with music and keep a song in your heart.
