Tuesday Morning Thoughts

This morning, as I listened to news about the hurricane pounding Haiti, I said a prayer for the people there. Many live in shacks that won’t withstand wind and torrential rain and floods. They are afraid to leave their homes, afraid their belongings will be stolen. Let’s remember them and ask the Lord to help them. I see that the United States is sending aid already and that’s wonderful. I’m sure church groups will be sending help but right now, the Haitians are in peril.

Today, we have weather warnings far in advance of hurricanes. I wonder what people did a hundred or more years ago? Did they watch for weather signs? Did the sea birds come to shore in large numbers or suddenly disappear into hiding? Was there a change in the temperature or wind direction, or a feeling of oppression in the air? Books have been written about the hurricane that destroyed Galveston, Texas in 1900, killing thousands. I’m grateful for the weather warnings we get now. The storms are still as potentially deadly but at least we can know they are coming.

And, speaking of warnings, the hurricane seems to be heading for the southeastern United States. Friends and family in that section of the country, please be aware and safe.

We in northwest Arkansas have a chance for rain beginning tomorrow. That will be appreciated because plants and grass are getting mighty dry. I’m watering flowers and keeping water out for the birds. A family of robins comes to the bird bath about the same time each evening. Robins are sociable birds and I like to think about the family gathering in and talking things over before going to bed.

This planet has always had wicked weather from time to time. Storms come and storms go. We all experience them, whether they are weather-related or emotional.

We need to hang onto the lifeline of prayer and hope and remember that somewhere above the clouds, the sun is shining.
