Saying Good-bye to a Cozy Critter

Saying Good-bye to a Cozy Critter

(Cover picture is by Jane Barron.)

We filled the round booth in the back corner of the cafe. A bouquet of flowers sat on the table. Gathered around were five Cozy Critters, Carolyn, Peg, Nancy, Jane, and me. We laughed, took pictures, and ate. But, at the center of it all was a bit of sadness that we were all trying not to think about. Soon, Nancy and her husband will be moving out of state. A new job awaits them, and they feel it’s the Lord’s will that they go. However, we will miss her.

Several women yesterday remarked what they will remember about our critiques. It wasn’t the lovely paintings, nor the inspirational writings or terribly shivery mysteries; it wasn’t the hot coffee or home-baked goodies, or the warmth of the fireplace during cold winter months. It was the laughter. The fun we had as we giggled and talked and saw the light side of life was what we’ll all remember.

Yesterday may have been the last time all five of us will be together. If it was, then it’s a nice time to hold in our hearts and remember. That’s life. It changes. We have to be pretty resilient to make the best of all those changes. Life itself is uncertain, but there’s one thing I’m sure of. We’ve enjoyed knowing you, Nancy, and we’ll miss you. Godspeed.
