Rain!

Rain!

I could hardly believe the Tulsa meteorologist this morning but I’m sure he’s accurate. In a 24-hour period, Tahlequah received seven inches of rain! In Claremore, a firefighter lost his life in a storm drain while trying to deliver food. In Sapulpa, people are being evacuated by boat. Tornadoes in Oklahoma and Texas. May is sloshing as it makes its exit.

Arkansas too is experiencing flooding. I hope people will realize that a flooded street may be washed out and it takes very little water to float a car. The slogan, “Turn around; don’t drown” applies here. Remember, it doesn’t matter if you are late for an appointment or whatever. Don’t drive into a flooded street. Please.

Is the Illinois River in flood stage yet? If it isn’t, it probably will be. I can remember when it was all the way across the highway in many places. Believe me, that river looks fierce when it is brown, swirling, logs in eddies, and tree branches tangled in the roaring current.

When my mother was a child, sometimes the flooded Illinois would wash out a good corn crop just before it was ready to harvest. Hours and weeks of back-breaking work washed away and there was nothing the Latty family could do except watch.

To all my friends and family in the middle of the storms, please be safe. Don’t take chances!
