Highly Exalted Among Rulers

Hey, all you August people, did you know your birth month means highly exalted among rulers? It was named for the emperor Augustus, grand-nephew of Julius Caesar. So, lift up your heads and enjoy your month–it’s the last month of summer and is pretty nifty.

Your birth stone is the lovely, green peridot. Your flowers are the gladiolus, meaning strength of character, sincerity, and generosity, and also the poppy.

Summer declines and roses have grown rare,
But cottage crofts are gay with hollyhocks,
And in old garden walks you breathe an air
Fragrant of pinks and August-smelling stocks.

—John Todhunter (1839-1916)

From the Old Farmer’s Almanac

Here in my neck of the woods, August came in with thunder and a cooling shower. It was nice for everyone but Nemo; however, with his thunder shirt for courage, he made it through.

August does signify a change in nature. The temperature is still sizzling, flowers are still blooming, but there’s a slight difference, the winding down of yet another season. It’s a time for gathering in of summer’s bounty and preparing for the season ahead.

It’s also a time for reading. As we talked about yesterday, if your reading includes looking into your ancestry, this is a great time to start or to continue that family tree. August–a month whose very name means exalted or glorious, is a great month for looking up those exalted ancestors who, in time, produced the glorious you!
