A Day Late and a Dollar Short

A Day Late and a Dollar Short

Have you ever heard that old saying, “I’m just a day late and a dollar short?” Well, that’s me this morning. I slept right through the red blood moon and I missed last night’s State of the Union address by President Trump. I’m sure many of you saw both and you are to be congratulated! If it’s anything in my favor, I did get a few pictures of the full moon just about dark last night. It was, indeed, beautiful.

So, January is on its way out and February is waiting in the wings. It’s a beautiful morning, perfect for viewing the moon or anything else in the clear, blue heaven. This morning I saw a flock of about seven or eight black-capped chickadees on my lawn. Now, is that the sign of anything? Except a bunch of hungry birds?

Speaking of descriptions (we were, weren’t we?) we have wonderful words in the English language with which to tell about what we are seeing or hearing or feeling. As I read, I like to get a sense of where the protagonist is and what she is experiencing; don’t you? One of the masters of description was western author Zane Grey. He was my dad’s favorite author. I think we read all of his books, probably more than once.  And, this is his birthday. Born in 1872, he brought a lot of pleasure to many people. He did good during his time on earth. And, that’s a wonderful epitaph for anyone. Thank you, Mr. Grey.

So, as this month ends and another is waiting in the wings, we take with us into February, all the things we are and have and will become. I take with me my group of friends. I’m grateful for each of you. And, if Darcy, Flora, and Ned could step out of their books and speak to you, they’d tell you they are grateful too. This is a quote from an unknown author: A friend is a treasure who loves you as you are, sees not only who you are but who you can become, is there to catch you when you fall, shares your everyday experiences, accepts your worst but helps you become your best, understands your past, believes in your future, accepts you today just as you are, and comes in when the whole world has gone out.

On friends, I am never a day late or a dollar short. I have a basket of blessings overflowing and I’m truly thankful.
