With a Beehive

This from four years ago. Fun!

Sometimes things happen at just the right time. They couldn’t be more fortuitous. Yesterday was one of those times.

We Cozy Critters sitting around the hundred-year old table sounded like a bunch of bees. Except, I don’t think bees laugh a lot and probably don’t discuss books. I’ve never seen a bee eat gingersnaps or drink coffee either.

Carolyn told us a true story about a calf who took a ride in a Cadillac. I’m not kidding. This really happened and should be put into a book. She also brought an article about the proper use of who and whom, she and her. We had to listen hard but sorted it all out.

Carolyn showed us two paintings which she will put in the show at War Eagle next month. One was a pretty Santa portrait, the other, a large, beautiful oil of a little girl and a horse. In spite of all her artistic and crafty things, Carolyn had time to write poetry. She read two poems, Blank Canvas I and Blank Canvas II. Thoughtful and creative writing.

Jane, who is also an artist, brought her colored pencil drawing of Hattie Mae and Cora. This illustrated her story/poem, Hattie Mae’s Easter Hat. I believe she is, even now, working on a poem about correctly using who and whom. Someday, maybe Jane will compile her stories and poems into a book. I hope so.

Peg is always busy with many things but still finds time to read and tell us what she does or doesn’t like in a book. She just finished a mystery about a mother and daughter, a mysterious stranger found dead at a burning house, and the flood of the century. In addition, she read Rest Ye Murdered Gentlemen by Vicki Delany and Cancelled by Murder by Jean Flowers. On her “to be read” list is Christmas Caramel Murder by Joanne Fluke.

Nancy will be sending three devotionals to Just Between Us magazine. Later, they will be part of a compilation into a book. The neat thing about Nancy’s stories is that I’m always inspired by the uplifting messages, even as I critique. It’s pretty nice to hear the stories first, before they are in print.

While Jane, Peg, Nancy, and Carolyn are encouragers and are sympathetic with the ups and downs of writing, they also are critiquers. Their suggestions and corrections are given in a gentle way but are, nonetheless, to the point and helpful. Their insight, as I read my book in progress, Fright of the Silvery Moon, shed light on several areas and I’m grateful.

Peg was going out the front door after our session, when she called back, “Books are here!”004

Of course, we all ran to the living room. On the front porch sat the box of my newest book, Grave Heritage, hot off the presses. The excitement! The opportune arrival! The beehive hum rose in intensity!005

Everyone gathered around as I tore into this box of beautiful new books, and you know what? I had my first book signing and sold four books on the spot! These Cozy Critters are wonderful people.009

What a perfect way to end a day!008
