We in the South have heard that phrase a lot. Usually, it is said tongue in cheek. And probably a lot of us remember Tennessee Ernie Ford saying, “Bless your little pea-pickin’ heart.”
Anyway, I got to thinking about blessings. They fall like rain on and around us each day and night. I like to read the blessings from the Bible. My favorite is Numbers 6:24-26, “The Lord bless thee and keep thee; The Lord make his face shine upon thee and be gracious unto thee; The Lord lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.”
Then I started thinking about blessings for grandmas. The Lord bless thy bones that they creak not neither pop loudly when thou sittest down and when thou risest up.
The Lord bless thine eyesight so that it can see the intricate workings of thy grandchildren’s technology.
The Lord bless thy mind so that it understandeth the intricate workings of thy grandchildren’s technology.
The Lord bless thine ears so they can hear the sweet voices of thy grandchildren when they say they love thee.
The Lord bless thy knees so that when thou jumpest over small objects in a wild dash to touch base in a game of Hide and Seek, thy joints don’t land thee flat on thy backside.
I could go on but we do receive and crave blessings each day from our Heavenly Father. It is up to us to recognize them for what they are: gifts from the bountiful hand of the Lord.
Oftentimes my rambling thoughts center around our Nation and I confess that I yearn for a return to the sanity I remember vaguely, maybe back in the 1950s? I spun a fanciful daydream of me standing in front of Congress and telling them how to run things. It went something like this:
She climbed to the podium, frail and gray. And spoke to the Congress assembled that day:
The reason our Nation is troubled, of course,You’ve gotten the cart in front of the horse.
Then, I would go on to say that the only way to have peace and prosperity in our land is to put God and His laws first then the blessings will follow.
There is another old hymn that I love, “There Shall Be Showers of Blessing”. They revive us, refresh us and teach us of the mercies of God.

AMEN! Very well put! Love the blessings for grandma’s. I too need to recognize all of God’s blessings. From God all blessings flow!
Thanks for the kind words, Norma.
My daughter who loves living in Florida, lived briefly in Oklahoma 20 years ago and it drove her crazy every time she heard, “Oh Bless your heart”. So I thought of her with this writing, but I’d say that the way Tennessee Ernie Ford said it, . . . who could resist it then? If I didn’t see the blessings of God each day, I’d be in a loony bin somewhere!
