She’s coming. Better get ready. Will she stay long? Boy! I hope not!
How do I get ready for an unwanted guest? Batten down the hatches! Yesterday was a family affair in cleaning the children’s pool, winterizing it as best we could. Now it looks forlorn and unsettled, like it’s waiting for something. And, it is. But, it is a chore that’s taken care of, a winterizing that had to be done.
Today, I’ll bring in flowers, unhook hoses, and be sure I have enough food in the house to last until the visitor leaves. How long will that be? One day? Two or three or more?
From all I hear, she will blow into town tomorrow, violent by nature, and make herself known. Temperatures will drop, trees will lose their brightly colored leaves and people will peer out windows, wondering at the sudden change in climate. I rather think she enjoys seeing the drastic and dramatic effect she has on lives and landscapes.
She goes by several names: Arctic Air Mass, Killer Cold Front, Baneful Blast (those last two names are not from the weather bureau.) But anyway, she isn’t going to be in a good mood. Are you strongly fortified with food, cozy mysteries and plenty of coffee? I am, and I’m going to take the opportunity to, as a very old poem says, “Sit and laugh at it and tend my cozy fire a bit.” I hope you do too.

My sentiments exactly!
