The Way It Was

The Way It Was

Why is it that older people have a tendency to look back and remember while younger people are all about thinking toward the future? With the school year coming to a close, youngsters are looking forward to a summer of freedom with a great deal of anticipation. Come to think of it, teachers may be doing the same thing.

This morning, as I look out of my window at the street and the occasional car or walker going past, I’m wondering how much this scene has changed through the years. I’m told this area used to be farm land and I can still see reminders, here and there. Before that, though, who or what was here? Was it basically a place of trees and animals? If people of 200 years ago could suddenly look at my street now as I do, would they see anything at all that looks familiar? I think not. I think it would be as different to them as an alien planet would be to me.

Sometimes, it’s good to think about the way it was. We need to carry the good parts of the past with us and not dwell on the not so good. It’s springtime; there’s hope in the air. Taking trust and courage as our companions, we move on into what will be.
