The Squirrel’s Nest

From my front room window, I can see a squirrel’s nest on a high limb of my neighbor’s tree. I wonder about these nests that are easily visible when leaves are off the trees. In summer, they’re hidden by thick leaves but in winter, that covering is gone. Do the squirrels still live there? I don’t see any coming or going from that bundle of sticks and leaves. Or, are they built mainly for the baby squirrels that are born each spring?

I’ve mentioned before that my oaks had no acorns this year. I think this may have been due to the extremely heavy hail that we had in the spring, about the time that acorns would have been forming. Whatever the reason, the squirrels may be hard put to find enough food to last the winter. I doubt that the seeds in my bird feeder would feed a whole family of the bushy-tailed rodents throughout the long winter.

Speaking of which, we are forecast to have true wintry weather this weekend. And, that is a signal for me to get in a supply of groceries. Thank goodness I don’t have to depend upon the whims of weather, as do the poor squirrels.

Lots of nests are visible in the trees lately but I don’t know the difference between bird nests and squirrel nests
