The Secret of Singing Pines

The Secret of Singing Pines

Okay, Cozy Critters, and anyone else who has an opinion. What do you think of this as an opening for my fifth Ned McNeil moonlight mystery? I’m not going to finish this here, I’m working on it, though. Just wanted to ask if this is an opening that makes you want to read more. What do you think?

“How lucky can you get?” Pat set her coffee mug on the table with a clunk.

Jackie looked thoughtful. “Are you going?”

“Of course, she’s going!” Pat said. “What a gift! Staying in a beautiful place in the Georgia mountains absolutely free—who wouldn’t go?”

“Me,” I said, my voice sounding pitifully small.

My two friends stared at me.

I fiddled with my napkin. “Well, how can I? There’s so much going on here. An open house at Bonnie’s school is coming up and Cade keeps pushing me for a wedding date and, well, there’s Miss Ann. She has been in the hospital and I’m afraid she’s not recovering well, and…”

Jackie interrupted. “Just what did your Atlanta friend say, Ned?”

“Her name is Bertie Daniels,” I said. “She recently inherited a good bit of money and has been able to buy a lovely estate called Singing  Pines, way up in the mountains of Georgia. She is fixing it up to be one of those fabulous vacation homes that very wealthy people can rent short term, a month, two months, whatever. Anyway, she needs to be away for a while, so, she…”

“So Bertie wants you to stay in that fabulously beautiful place until she gets back,” Jackie finished for me.
