That Seals the Deal

Handshakes–what are they and where did they come from? It is a ritual that we take for granted, one we’ve used or seen repeated time after time. From what I’ve read, the handshake may have started as a sign of friendship or to show the other person that they come in peace–the hand is empty of any weapon. It is a pledge or a promise–sort of “sealing the deal.”

Today, when people are introduced or when they see each other after a time apart, they often use a handshake as a way of greeting. When a transaction is completed, as in buying a house or a car, it’s often sealed with a handshake.

Do you shake hands and, if you do, is your handshake firm but not painful? It it like holding a limp dishrag? Is it a contest about whose grip is the strongest?

I enjoy shaking hands because it seems to establish things more firmly. It is a connection with the other person and denotes good will. It’s also one old custom that has endured for centuries. May it continue!
