Snow, Rain, Lightning, Thunder…

Secrets

No one would guess it; No one would know,

But curled and cuddled under the snow

A season of secrets is waiting to grow.

Acres of daisies, Carpets of clover

Are resting and waiting

Til Winter is over.

The latest round of weather may be aggravating, disappointing, or frustrating but it could never be thought of as boring. In a 24-hour period, the sun shone, rain fell, snow dusted the ground, freezing rain fell, lightning flashed and thunder grumbled. Perhaps this is because of the Equinox? Does anybody know? I can imagine two of Mother Nature’s children, Spring and Winter engaged in a struggle. Winter doesn’t want to let go of his hold on weather while Spring is determined that his time is up.

For a while, the snow fell in soft, fluffy puffs. It looked beautiful on my fading purple hyacinths, the yellow forsythia and the newly opened bridal wreath. But, alas, it turned to rain.

The birds and squirrels weren’t that concerned with the weather as long as the feeders remained full. Squirrels are rodents and don’t care that they are not always loved in some quarters but they can be cute. I got an up close and personal view of one little squirrel (I think it must have been a girl) who was absolutely devastated that she had been caught in the rain and wasn’t looking her best. She perched on the ledge outside my kitchen window and tried to remedy the damage done to her appearance. True, she was in sad shape. Her once fluffy tail looked like a soggy feather and rain stuck wispy fur  against her body. She was all in a dither. She used her paws to smooth and straighten. She tried to shake the rain from that magnificent tail and then she just sat there, defeated and bewildered by her less than attractive condition.

God’s mercies are new every morning as Scripture says so birds, squirrels and humans can take courage with a new day. Maybe Winter is having a tussle with spring and is in a bad mood about having to retreat for a couple of seasons but I’ve got a feeling that spring will prevail! After all, that’s what the calendar and the early flowers are telling us and below this soggy earth there are many more seeds of future flowers. They are just waiting to be sure of their welcome.
