Remembering the Good Times

Last summer, my sister Helen’s three daughters and daughter-in-law drove up from Texas for a visit. What a fun day that was! We reminisced, laughed, delved into genealogy, and caught up with each other’s lives. And, we remembered some special times with Helen. They knew Helen as their mom and I knew her as my sister, but to all of us, she was a unique, lovely person. Remembering her together, as we did, brought her back for just a few precious moments.

My sister was never bored and she was always busy. Her house was spotless; her cooking was the best. She was lively and interesting because she was interested in her family, her friends, and those around her. She also loved to read and to write. She left some beautiful poetry, songs, and views on life. She was an inspiration to others and a joy just to be near.

She had a lively sense of humor. We would laugh together over some of the silliest things that nobody else thought were funny. Some of our best conversations were had over a sink full of sudsy dishwater as she washed and I dried.

She didn’t have time to be sad and always tried to look at the bright side of things. This is her birthday and I miss her, but I think of what she told me once, many years ago, “We’ll remember the good times.” So, happy birthday, Sis, and thank you for the good times.
