Red Shamrocks and Courage

Red Shamrocks and Courage

It lay there, scattered on the ground. Shattered red leaves were strewn across the dirt and all that was left was a tangle of roots with one or two drooping leaves still hanging on. I carefully dug it out, put it in a pot, and carried it into the kitchen. Now, it rests on the windowsill and those two or three leaves are looking better.

I should have known not to put my shamrock outside. I’d carefully sheltered it for years, but it had out-grown its pot and needed more room. A larger pot wouldn’t fit on the windowsill. So, since many shamrocks like being outside in a shady area, I thought this might too. And, it may have,  if given the chance to find out. Alas, squirrels had a different idea.

Which squirrel did the dirty deed? Six of them live in my backyard, uninvited and unappreciated, so I’m not sure who the culprit was. I did see one approach the area the next day, perhaps wondering if more shamrocks were around to shred.

But, you know what? A shamrock is tenacious. Given even a small chance, it’ll grow. And, sure enough, that hardy little plant is making a comeback. It’s a lesson we humans need to think about. It was broken and scattered, but it held on and survived. It had to overcome a great deal of adversity. And, it is winning the battle.
