Moonstruck

Moonstruck

Did anybody wind up moonstruck after gazing at that spectacular full moon last night? I sincerely hope not, or if you did, I hope it was only a fleeting malady and you were normal once you dragged your eyes away from the dazzling heavenly scene.

Many songs, poems, and stories center around the moon and its mysterious light, shining down at us from so far away. The Moonlight Ride of Paul Revere, Dark Moon, Shine on, Harvest Moon, By the Light of the Silvery Moon, Molly Darlin’ (while fair luna hides her light), the list goes on. Oh! And, of course, Moonlight Can Be Murder, and By the Fright of the Silvery Moon. Truth is, the moon is probably not too attractive close up, but its beauty comes from the reflected light of the sun.

It’s amazing to me that the moon is the perfect distance from the sun and the earth. It controls the tides, marks the seasons, and is essential for our existence. Just an accident? I don’t think so. I believe it was all planned by God who set the worlds in space.

Each time we have a beautiful full moon or a silvery crescent that is particularly lovely, I try to get a picture. I get the pictures all right, but they never do the moon justice.

Lots of old sayings and superstitions surround the moon. One is that if you gaze at it too long, you’ll go crazy so I hope nobody looked at it that long! I’m not sure how these got started; maybe ancient people tried to explain unusual happenings this way. The sun is shining brightly this morning and it looks like a pretty day is on its way. Hopefully, we all made it through the night without staring at our friendly satellite too long and running the risk of becoming moonstruck.
