Meeting Old Friends in the Rain

Meeting Old Friends in the Rain

Rain falls this morning, pattering on the deck, washing the leaves until they glisten. I love the sound of rain! And the smell of rain!

Yesterday, I was on a hunt. A story I had written many years ago was missing! It still is. Because, as I searched, I unearthed many stories, poems, pictures I hadn’t seen for a long time, but I found everything except the one story I wanted to find! My filing system is not the most organized. Some might even call it haphazard, but I look at it this way–finding past writings here and there is like finding nice little surprises tucked back and forgotten, like meeting old friends–surprising, happy, and more than a little nostalgic.

I thought you might be interested in a few of my discoveries. A couple of pictures of my Tahlequah home, Manos Meadows, came to light. One was the meadow in the fog. That’s a favorite memory–ribbons of fog drifting across the prairie grass, the old fence, the deserted garden, Mr. Beaverson’s blueberry field. There’s nothing more silent and mysterious than fog–moving without feet, lifting, settling, hiding, transforming a familiar landscape into a strange and unknown place.

Then, there was a snowy picture I thought about using as a Christmas card, but I don’t recall that I ever did. I made this picture while standing in the pasture and looking at the back of our house. Home! Lots of memories of many dear people who came and went within those walls.

But, this morning, I sit here with a cup of excellent Folger’s coffee and listen to the rain. Rain and remembering–they go together, don’t they? Nemo isn’t concerned with memories, good or bad. Or, at least, I don’t think he is. Who is to know what really goes on inside that noble head?

If it’s raining at your house this morning, enjoy listening to it while savoring a cup of coffee. If you don’t have rain, but need it, I pray the Lord sends an abundance your way. This is the day the Lord has made. Let’s rejoice and be glad in it.

I too am setting here drinking a cup of strong Folger’s coffee while listening to it rain. You are right, rain and remembering go together. Some days it seems like only yesterday that our families were still at home and it was a busy place to be…but, now I have to admit I enjoy a quiet rainy morning on my quiet front porch with my doggies. We must get together for a cup of coffee and catch up on each other’s lives. Dianna Jarvis Steinman

. Yes, those years when our children were at home really flew by. It’s nice to sit and enjoy the rain and not have to meet a deadline. I’d love to get together for coffee…don’t seem to get to Tahlequah all that often any more.
