An added benefit of being a writer: when I’m staring out the window or at a blank sheet of paper, I’m not actually idle. I’m working! At least, my mind is. Yesterday after an email from a friend in a different state, I began thinking about friendships and how important they are to me. The older I get, the dearer are those friends, whether they are old friends or new ones. I think of the verse that probably most of us know: “Make new friends but keep the old; One is silver, the other is gold.” I don’t know who wrote it so I don’t know who to credit but it is certainly true. From that, my thoughts swung to the blizzard that is forecast for the northeast and hoping that no one succumbs to the violent weather. I wish for them warmth and plenty of food and water and shelter from the unrelenting cold. In times of crisis, sometimes strangers become instant friends. So, as I gaze out the window at the sunshine and early spring flowers, I think about those in the path of dangerous weather and hope they have shelter from the storm and plenty of people to offer help and friendship.
