Endings and Beginnings

Endings and Beginnings

A new year is waiting to make its appearance Sunday and the old year is getting ready to be put away and assigned to memory. We all hope for a better year in every aspect of life. We face 2023 with a great deal of resolutions, wishes, and perhaps a few old tales just to insure that things go well.

For instance, don’t forget when you get out of bed January 1, you put your right foot on the floor before the left. This insures getting started off on the right foot. If you eat anything circular, such as doughnuts or bagels, that’s a good thing too although I’m not sure why except they taste yummy. Here in the South, we make sure we eat black-eyed peas and cornbread, maybe collard greens. That particular practice goes back to the Civil War when the northern soldiers made sure to destroy everything edible that Southerners might eat. About the only thing left in some instances was black-eyed peas.

The future always seems a bit scary to me; yes, it sounds exciting and filled with possibilities, but at the same time, it is rather daunting to imagine some of the things that might happen. Fear, however, is not faith and the Bible encourages us to hang onto hope. Jeremiah 29:11 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope. ~ Romans 15:13.

This morning dawns sunny with a blue sky smiling down upon us. Thankfully, the wind isn’t causing havoc and the ground is not covered with ice or snow. That’s great and the weatherman doesn’t say anything about wintry weather, at least in the near future. If we have rain Sunday, that’s fine. We can always use it.

The road into the new year starts January 1. As you travel it, don’t forget to take a good book along with you.
