Dust dissolves in muddy places, Daisies nod their dampened faces,
And the earth, aglow and glistening, Is refreshed, renewed again.
Yesterday I took a drive through a countryside that was indeed aglow and glistening from recent April rains. Towering pines were a dark counterpoint to an azure sky. New leaves on the deciduous trees looked as if an artist had lightly brushed the woods with a blush of green. And on the ground, carpets of bluets and wild violets raised their heads to drink in the sunshine. Hundreds of bluets blooming together added a rare fragrance to the air. I like to think of that scent as the breath of springtime.
As I drove, birds flashed across the road in front of me; cardinals and blue birds. While on the ground, robins were so busy trying to find a hapless worm that they hardly noticed the car.
The recent rain brought to life hidden springs so I splashed through streams that meandered across the road. These small creeks sparkled in the sunlight. Watercress pushed through the water in many places. A couple of cottontail rabbits raced alongside the car for a bit and then dodged off into the bushes.
And I thanked God for the springtime and wondered if this beautiful scene might be just a tiny reflection of the Garden of Eden. The world as God made it, is a lovely place and surely when the Creator spoke the first Garden into existence, He patterned it after His home, Heaven.
A bonus about yesterday’s drive was that I brought it home with me. When this technological world gets too confusing, I can go back in memory to that drive through a springtime countryside and, like the earth, be refreshed and renewed again.
