And, On That Note

Yesterday, I talked about words, their power, and the way we use them. On that note, I’d like to give my view of how these words many times are used to divide and infiltrate, to promote dissention and hatred.

Books, movies, news stories that concentrate on past wrongs, evils, shameful laws are supposed to be bringing things to light, I suppose, bringing them out in the open and acknowledging them. But then, how about we move on past this to lessons learned, sins forgiven, and the things we have in common? How about we move into the realm of compassion and love?

How can words or pictures that are used to promote hatred and a feeling of entitlement promote peace? How about we move past words that divide and move into words that unite, words like understanding, acceptance, commonality and celebration of individuality?

The most insidious words of all are presented as truth when they aren’t. It seems to me that we’ve grown an awfully lot, and realized and repented of many, many wrongs.  Instead of emphasizing the negative, how about we emphasize the positive? Must we always stay in a state of contrition or can we be allowed to take lessons learned into the present and make sure we don’t repeat them in the future?

Individuality is a great word. It’s a word that says I don’t have to be like you and you don’t have to be like me. We have a lot in common, but we’re also unique and we can like each other for who we are. Celebrate who you are. Nobody likes to go through life cringing and wallowing in the past. Personally, I wouldn’t want to think of myself as a victim and I can’t believe anyone else does either.
