Ahead of Yourself

Ahead of Yourself

Don’t get ahead of yourself. Have you ever heard that phrase? I’ve been thinking a lot about it this morning. To me, it means thinking or fearing something may be true or will happen. It applies to me.

In this period in America, it’s easy to over-think, to wonder and worry, not only about the future, but about what’s happening right now! Americans haven’t been this divided in more than a century, to my way of looking at it. And, hatred instead of understanding seems to rule the internet, the news media, political parties.

First, politics divided us, then the CoVid virus, then, the CoVid innoculation, and now all three of those things. There seems to be no middle ground of understanding, and one wonders just how all these wounded feelings, people, and actions can ever be mended.

Then, this morning, I read a Bible verse: All flesh is grass, and all the goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field. Isaiah 40:6

And then, another: Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope.  Romans 5:13.

We are beset with what ifs, and what can I do, and on top of it all is a heavy layer of distrust, a failure to see another’s viewpoint, and fear. We have become a fearful people.

I don’t know the answers to any of these seemingly unsolvable problems, but God has given me today. Today, I can hope and pray, and try to do good for others. I can enjoy each moment of this day, right here and now, because I don’t know how many more moments I’ll have on earth and neither do you.

So, instead of getting ahead of myself with worry and regrets, with anger and fear, I’ll drop all that and trust that God will lead, forgive, and shine His light on the truth. Today is the day that the Lord has made, and that’s where I’m living. I’m not living in yesterday, nor tomorrow, but today. Worry won’t change a thing. Trust and hope will, if nothing else, change me.
