Sometimes, it’s nice to look back and remember some particularly good times. When the Cozy Critters got together, there were good times a-plenty. This is a remembrance of one of those times, a few years ago. Good friends, all.
When four friends meet on a fall day, bringing with them their outlooks on life, the books they’ve read, and the paintings they’ve painted, plus a few original writings, well, what could be better? The coffee and sugar cookies helped, of course, but conversation carried the day.
Sadie at the Beach by Jane Barron
Jane, Carolyn, and Peg came through the door, bringing with them a lot of laughter and chatter, and, as I’ve said, paintings. Jane’s was especially unusual. In fact, I’ve never seen dryer lint used as a medium before, but there it was. Sadie had won a prize or two for Jane and I can see why. Jane added the background and a frame, but Sadie was entirely composed of lint Jane took from the filter of her clothes dryer.
Jane, who is multi-talented, also brought a poem she had written for a family member who had a close encounter with a donkey named Molly and the donkey’s sharp teeth and volatile disposition. The result was a broken finger and a trip to the ER, but, Jane was asked to write a poem about it and the whole episode resulted in a touch of humor to lighten the otherwise grim situation. The poem, Good Golly, Miss Molly, kept us giggling as Jane read.

Carolyn is regularly commissioned to paint specific subjects. She brought three of her oil paintings. She also brought farm-fresh eggs, peppers, and okra from her garden. Between her farm animals, her garden, and her art.

Peg is a connoisseur of cozy mysteries. She reads a lot and knows why one book appeals to her and another, not so much. One of her latest reads is A Deadly Brew, A Novella by Lynn Cahoon. She liked the interesting characters and the plot that moved quickly along.
Leaves were falling and a touch of autumn was in the air as the Cozy Critters left, going back to their homes, their paintings, their writing and reading. It was a good day, a pleasant way to spend part of a lovely afternoon. Yesterday’s sky was a brilliant blue, with white and gray thunderclouds building, presaging a change in the weather and today’s falling temperatures. For several seasons, these Cozy Critters have come and gone to the hundred-year old table, bringing their own stories and joy with them. And yes, sometimes tears, because as the seasons come and go, don’t we have the clouds mixed with the sun? But, each day is a good day for sharing and caring, to look inward as well as outward, and to look forward to more of these pleasant times as we journey life’s road together.
