What would you do if a ghost had you by the back of the neck?
The night was cold and snowy (in my dream) and I was walking through hills of mounded snow. At least, I thought they were hills of snow but with no warning at all, those gentle mounds came alive. Well, I guess you’d say alive; anyway, they moved. They rose up and they surrounded me. They were ghosts, not snow. To add to the terror, one of those cold, spooky things grabbed me by the back of the neck.
I screamed! A perfectly normal reaction to being grabbed by a nightmare. My family has told me that my voice would wake up everybody within ten miles. That night, it woke up my family. Mom came running into my room.
“What is it?” she cried. “What’s wrong?”
“A ghost got me by the back of the neck!” I yelled.
Reassuring me that there was no ghost; it was only my imagination that had petrified the household, I finally calmed down.
I still have dreams, thoughts and images that flit through my subconscious as I sleep but I think when I was much younger, my dreams were a little more dramatic. The dream about the ghost occurred when I was probably eight years old and, even after several decades, I still remember how scared I was.
I never lived down that dream . It was a family legend for years like the time I sat in a steel trap. But, that’s another story.
