A Cold Good-bye

January is going out in a frigid sort of way. On my thermometer, it’s five degrees this morning! But, February we think of as the last winter month, so there is hope! Even though winter sometimes hangs on into March, we won’t think of that this morning when everything outside is frozen and still.

I remember winters of my childhood. Horse, cows, chickens, all had to be fed, even on the coldest January day. Each night, eggs had to be gathered. Farm life went on, no matter the weather.

The sun is shining and the sky is blue, but it is deceptive. A little purple finch flies onto the front porch, looking for a bite or two from the grape vine. There’s food in the back yard, bird seed, but he seems to be hoping for something in front. I hesitate to put out food on the front porch because the cats come around for their daily hand-out and I don’t want to put him in harm’s way.

Winter is hard  on animals and birds. Hard on humans too, who have to deal with the cold. A good cozy mystery and a hot cup of coffee will go a long way in warming up this shivery day.
