Early Bird Flowers

They do this every year–pop up from their winter homes in January. Out by my mailbox, small, green shoots of narcissus poke up. By the front porch, hyacinth blades raise their heads. Maybe it’s because of the warmer weather or maybe they’re just getting tired of being underground. They’ll undoubtedly get nipped by frost or ice but that never stops their optimism. And, when spring truly comes, they’ll venture forth again.

We are in need of rain and we have a chance for that tomorrow. We’ll surely get winter weather one day soon but until we do, the early bird flowers show us that no matter how bare yard and gardens look, below the surface, life is stirring and lifting eager heads, impatient to breathe fresh air and feel sunshine for yet another season.
