Where There’s a Will…

Squirrels are interesting little animals, smart and quick, and I like them fine as long as they stay away from digging and chewing my plants and robbing the bird feeder.

I have a squirrel-proof feeder and it works better than any I’ve ever had, but, believe it or not, the wily squirrels have found a way to outsmart the manufacturer. They shinny up the pole holding the feeder, then while hanging onto the pole, reach over with one paw and lift a seed at a time from the feeder. So I, hoping that I’m smarter than the squirrel, grease the pole from which hangs the feeder. It works! Of course, with the sun melting it and rain washing the grease away, the pole has to be re-greased often.

I get a kick out of watching the ornery little rodent start up the pole and then slide back down, paws covered in grease. The birds’ food is safe and I have a feeling of victory. By the way, enough sunflower seeds drop down from the feeder that the squirrels have a feast on the ground without getting even one paw greasy!
