What Is a Family?

What is a family to you? Who are the people in your life that you hold dearest of all? To most of us, it’s our parents, siblings, children, grandparents, grandchildren– but it can mean more than that.

Darcy Campbell and Flora Tucker are family. Flora is Darcy’s mom. But, they are more than mother and daughter; they are best friends. They share confidences, they enjoy being together; each one is vital to the other. These two do something that many families don’t–they solve mysteries. Because of that, they get into danger, face down ruthless people, and come through some mighty tight places, together. They have a special bond. They love each other and when one hurts, the other hurts too.

Ned McNeil, on the other hand, is without a family. Her parents, her husband are all dead. She thought she had one last living relative–her uncle, but, sadly, this was not to be. It didn’t take long, though, for her childhood friends Pat and Jackie to find her. They became best pals again, after decades of being apart. Cade, too, is an important part of Ned’s life. These four people share experiences, care about each other’s thoughts and worry about the dangers involved in thwarting a bad guy’s plans. When one hurts, the others gather around. Ned’s personality leads her to sometimes do foolish things, but her friends don’t criticize nor cast her out. They are just simply there for her. She depends on them and they depend on each other.

Families are dear to all of us. We would risk our lives for them and being a part of a family is one of life’s greatest blessings. Family, however, is a warm, inclusive circle that gathers in all those who walk closest to us in life’s journey.
