My Dad’s Birthday

The character trait that stood out most in my dad was honesty. His handshake was as good as a written contract. He never found it necessary to curse or lie. Lest you think he was formidable and unyielding, let me say that he enjoyed a laugh as much as anybody, loved to sing and dance an Irish jig. His favorite pastimes were playing checkers and horse shoes and his favorite dessert was coconut cream pie.

My dad was my rock, a person I could depend on and trust. Greatness is achieved, not through fame or fortune, but through strength of character. It is comforting to know that there are people for whom honor and truth still matter. In the words of St. Paul, “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” (Philippians 4:8)
