Do You Have a Song in Your Heart?

Several times in the Old Testament, God commands the children of Israel to sing. In at least one instance, God told the commander of the Israelite army to put the singers out in front of the soldiers as they went into battle. I can imagine the enemy looked mean and forbidding and the last thing the Israelites felt like doing was sing. But, they obeyed. As they sang, their courage rose, and the enemy wondered what was happening with this group of upstarts who didn’t seem to be afraid.

Whether we can carry a tune or not, we can have music in our hearts, a gladness that brightens the day for ourselves and others. Each person has a talent and sometimes that talent lies in knowing what to say or not to say, in just being present to lend a helping hand, a listening ear, or a caring heart. We can cheer the day for someone, without knowing a thing about music. Caring is a wonderful gift, a blessed song to sing.
