Background Noise

A year or so ago, we were being warned that the cicadas, that summertime insect, would be much louder than usual. They weren’t. At least, around here they weren’t. But this summer–wow! Their grating song can’t be missed. Funny thing is, I don’t mind it. It’s a summer noise I’ve heard all my life. When I was a kid, we called those cicadas jar flies. But, they were one and the same as cicadas and their song then was just as loud as it is now.

I see them stuck on the screens, on their way out of this world. Sad to say, when Nemo finds a dead one, he crunches it up. I was afraid he would promptly up-chuck but, no. His digestive system handles that added tidbit to his diet.

Also, I find the dried shells of their former life. Why do they crawl out of these locust-shaped hulls? What do they do after crawling out? Are they the ones I find lying on the deck, the ones Nemo thinks are flavorful?

Anyway, before they succumb, they grate out their summer song. I, for one, like to hear them.

Comments

  1. They’re part of the evening. At first I notice them again, but then they just blend in with the night noises.
