A Penny for Your Thoughts

A Penny for Your Thoughts

Something else in our society became obsolete as of yesterday–the penny. As Bob Dylan said, “The times, they are a-changin’.” And, money is changing right along with everything else.

Many people have been saving pennies for years–they have jars of pennies, from pennies of times long past, to bright and shiny pennies that look newly-minted. So, will they now become collector’s items? I wonder.

The half penny is the smallest denomination minted in the United States. Now, it is a collector’s item and worth much more than half a cent. The wheat penny, in good condition, is worth more than non-wheat pennies, and the list goes on. So, I guess maybe the penny will only increase in value? Do you think?

How about those old sayings that have been around for years? A penny saved is a penny earned, In for a penny, in for a pound, A penny for your thoughts? I imagine those old sayings will still be around even if the penny won’t be.

Remember hearing Frank Sinatra sing, Pennies From Heaven? What other songs have the word “penny” in them? Back in the ’60s, I owned some penny loafers–shoes with a slot for a penny. And then, there was penny candy at the store, the three-cent postage stamp and–well–the penny was a pretty important coin. Now, he is to be relegated to the ranks of collectibles, only a memory to be looked back on fondly, a relic of times past.

It’s a fast-paced world, an ever-changing world and I, for one, will miss my old friend, the penny.
