Trashy Mystery Solved Quickly

Trashy Mystery Solved Quickly

Yesterday, something happened that has never happened before, in all my twenty-one (at least) years, a real-life, short-lived mystery. It was still dark when I got up and went to the trash can to empty some coffee grounds. My waste basket is tall, white plastic. At the bottom of the waste basket, a light shone–not from the outside in, but from the inside out. What?? Then, I remembered. A couple of days before, I had thrown away a flashlight I thought was ruined. It wouldn’t click on and looked as if the batteries had leaked acid onto the lens. Evidently, I was wrong. The poor little thrown-away light was signalling me: “I’m here. Help! I’m working. I’ve learned my lesson so don’t throw me away.” Needless to say, I retrieved that stubborn light, wiped it down, and gave it another chance. I just hope it shines the next time I click “On.”
