Random Thoughts

Thinking of this and that this morning as I wait for my coffee to perk. It’s a chilly morning, stiff breeze and the sun is dappling my neighbor’s house and my yard with shade and light.

Isn’t that the way of life? Some shade, some light. Some storms, some smooth sailing and people go on, making the same mistakes, worried and wondering.

Who was it said something like, “If we don’t learn from history, we are doomed to repeat it.” Civilizations rise; civilizations fall when they turn from the worthwhile, solid foundations on which they were founded.

The past couple of mornings, I’ve been reading from the Book of Joel. Israel flourished when the people obeyed God. When they turned from Him and worshiped idols, they went into decline, were over-run by their enemies, and taken into captivity. Have you heard that a temple to Baal is being built in New York? Can you believe it?

The way to success is so simple: obey God. But, that is too simple, isn’t it? We search for other ways, our own ways, get bogged down, stumble and fall.

A squirrel climbs over the mailbox posts. I wonder if he hid some nuts last year in the crevices of the old wood? As a matter of fact, last fall acorns were plentiful and if squirrels do what we think they do, this little fellow stored enough to last all winter. Did he hide away enough to last until the nuts come on this fall? What do squirrels eat in spring and summer?

A robin hops across the lawn, stopping to listen for worms. I’m sure there are babies in that flimsy-looking nest at the back of my house. And, under my storage building lives a rabbit. He enjoys the clover in the yard. As much as I do not like insects that destroy my plants (even now they are making lace work of hollyhock leaves) I don’t use insecticides. I’d rather have the bees and butterflies, the rabbits and robins. IMG_0284

The coffee is ready now. Hot and strong and bracing.  Probably, I should have had a cup before writing this morning; maybe I wouldn’t have hopped here and there. I’ll try to collect these random thoughts into a coherent purpose for the day.

Wherever you are, I hope your day is blessed. Stay safe and well.
