A dear friend of mine sometimes wonders what’s God’s will for her life? Is she missing His calling? What is His calling? She worries. I’ve told her many times that she is accomplishing God’s will. He tells us to love Him, to love our neighbors as we love ourselves, to pray for each other, to be “kindly affectioned”. And, He tells us that as we go into the world each day, to tell and show others about Christ. She does all those things. To my way of thinking, she is certainly in God’s will and if He wants her to do something special, He’ll let her know.
Sometimes the world seems cold and uncaring, but a caring person can put a warm glow on even the harshest situation. Instead of a cruel, thoughtless word, we can temper our words with kindness and understanding. We can be one little candle shining in the darknessĀ andĀ the darker the night, the brighter the light.
When I was in Ireland, we stopped at a seaside place and I said I was determined to put my finger in the Irish Sea. Down some steep stone steps went those of us who wanted to get closer to the water. I edged even closer (foolish, I know but who said age makes a person wiser?) Anyway, going closer than the others to the sea, I bent down and put my hand in those restless, foaming, cold green waters.
Then, here came a wave, I turned around, found a warm, helping hand stretched out to me, grabbed it, and scrambled up the steps before the wave slapped me.
Friendly eyes, even from strangers, helping hands in large situations or small, can make a great deal of difference. They don’t cost a thing yet they are priceless.
