Typical June Morning

A squirrel is chasing another squirrel down the maple tree. Wait! Make that three squirrels, or, good night! I think it’s four. If there’s one thing I have in abundance, it’s squirrels. They are cute and playful. They also dig up my flowers, eat the sunflower seeds meant for the birds, and are a general nuisance.

This last day of June is, so far, dim and quiet. It’s one of those iffy mornings. It could rain, or maybe not. I wonder if we are still getting Sahara dust blown our way. Hence, the murkiness of the day.

This morning, as I was eating breakfast, a few profound thoughts kept me company, not that I welcomed them, but there they were! I wonder if it’s my age, or having idle time on my hands, that causes my rearview mirror to be larger and more intrusive than necessary. St. Paul said, “We take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ” (2 Corinthians 10:5). This, however, takes determination and practice. Every day. Several times a day.

So ends the month of June and tomorrow, a brand new month, offering opportunities galore, among them, taking charge of my thoughts! And, of course, many opportunities for watching the squirrels, who, I’m sure, never have an idle thought. They are far too busy.
