Yesterday, I looked at my herb garden and my Gardening Conscience smote me uncomfortably. It was a once beautiful place but now a lovely, invasive species called wild violets had taken over. I like wild violets a lot. They are some of the season’s first hopeful flowers, but, give them an inch and they’ll take the whole place.
So, armed with my gardening bench, gloves, and digging tools, I ventured forth. My hat, old jeans, long-sleeved shirt were necessities. I dug and pulled and finally, after several hours, I had reclaimed my lovely plot. Then, into the ground went lavender plants. I hope they grow and spread. I also have seeds waiting in packets and they’ll come next.
Out, too, came an owl, a turtle, a hedgehog, and a family of three frogs. They’ll sit happily among the herbs and flowers all season. I know they’re glad to be out of the storage building.
True, I was pretty tired afterward and today, I’ll probably be moving slow, but it’s done! Now, a trip to the store for more fencing–the low kind that I can just push into the ground. And, I’ll need another bird bath. So, on it goes–a good way to end May and welcome June.
