The Way We Were

The Way We Were

Yesterday, I saw a woman putting groceries in her car. Nothing unusual in that. What struck me as a little different was that she was wearing her pajamas. This isn’t the first time I’ve seen a man or a woman out in pajamas. To me, they always look sloppy. Sorry about that. I guess I am in a time warp because I remember the way we were.

By “the way we were”, I’m referring to my family and just about everybody else in a certain time and era. The era was the 1960s. Some of you may remember, but not many, I’m afraid, will recall the time when going out in public meant we dressed for it. I don’t mean we dressed up, but I can tell you for sure, we wouldn’t have worn our pajamas. That would have been Embarrassing!

I wonder if what we wear has anything to do with today’s standards in other areas of life. I’m not judging, I’m just wondering. I do think that being more relaxed and not dressing just to please others, is good. For example, when I started teaching school, women teachers were required to wear dresses, no pants for us. We also wore heels. I, for one, had a pair of flats in my room that I changed into after going to class.

Men could not wear jeans, but dressed in shirts and slacks, and sometimes ties. For that matter, when I attended college, nobody could wear jeans. Shorts or midriffs? No way! We would have been mortified to be seen in such attire. (And we would have been told to leave class.)

It’s good that teachers can dress more comfortably now. It makes a lot more sense to wear slacks, especially when dealing with little ones. I’m not picking on teachers. That’s just an area that I know about because I was there. It’s just the way we were.
