Patchwork Snow

The yards and roofs wear white patches today,  remnants of yesterday’s blanket of snow. Today’s weather had a little of everything; that is, everything except warmth and sunshine. This morning I awoke to thunder followed by sleet followed by rain. And brooding over all of it was a gray sky, not a trace of blue. If  the day were a person, it would be frowning. It’s foggy. It’s cold.  And the poor little cluster of daffodil leaves looks forlorn under the white mulberry tree.

On such a day, the fireplace is welcome and so are all the lights in the house. The computer hums and invites me to escape the bleak day and go back to Levi, Oklahoma to see what’s going on with Darcy and Flora. Guess what? It’s a cold winter day in Levi too. And, as if that were not enough, an old friend gives Flora a bit of shocking information which really floors our intrepid mother/daughter sleuths. Now they’ve got to deal with an unexpected twist in the mystery that is almost a century old. Not to worry, though, these ladies always bounce back and forge ahead to a solution.

So even though the sun has decided to sit this one out, there’s the warmth of the fireplace and the smiles of family that brighten any wintry day. And, in the near future, my dejected clump of daffodils will once again put forth a bloom bud. Another yellow blossom will brighten the ground under the white mulberry tree and sure enough, winter will be only a memory.
