When Whippoorwills Call

When Whippoorwills Call

It is cold this morning! Cold, dark, and wet. May is nearly half gone. Shouldn’t we have warm weather? My brother tells me that whippoorwills are calling now. He lives near a wooded area and hears these nighttime, springtime birds. It’s Whippoorwill Winter. I might have known.

My maple tree, just outside my window, is interesting this morning. At times, it is perfectly still, then a wild wind moves through, tossing its limbs. Nemo refuses to go out. He’s not too fond of damp and cold, whether whippoorwills are calling or not.

The weather might be a backdrop to the uncertainty of the times. Thing of it is, we can’t let it influence our moods. What if it’s dark and sort of scary outside of the house? We can light a candle, fire up the fireplace, turn on every light in every room, and pull positive thoughts around us, sort of like a comforting blanket, shutting out the cold.

Sometimes I put snatches of Scripture or quotes from others where I can read them when I’m in different rooms. Here are some that are nice to remember:

If you’re going through hell, keep going. Winston Churchill

Be strong and of a good courage. (Joshua 1:6)

I wish to have no connection with any ship that does not sail fast for I intend to go in harm’s way. John Paul Jones.

Never do a wrong thing to make a friend or to keep one. Robert E. Lee.

It is far better to be alone than to be in bad company. George Washington.

Always be a first rate version of yourself instead of a second rate version of somebody else. Judy Garland.

If you’ve reached the end of your rope, tie a knot in it and hang on. Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Some of these will make sense to you; some won’t. Anyway, Whippoorwill Winter won’t last. Neither will dark days. But, courage, faith, hope? These three things have been around a long time, and they are lasting. Think on them.
