The Cemetery at Night

Chapter 12

Miss Georgia had glanced at the clock before she left her house. It was nearing midnight. She had waited until the lights when out in Abigail’s and Monroe’s homes. She didn’t want nor need anyone telling her she was being foolish. So, she crept down to the cemetery feeling like a fugitive.

The little stone chapel just inside the cemetery’s front gate seemed to be the logical place to hide. She tried the front door. Locked! She would have to stay outside the building and hope she wasn’t spotted.

From the relative safety of the shadow of the chapel, Miss Georgia took a look around.  Nothing moved except the limbs of the ancient cedars, swaying in the breeze and shadows from scudding patches of clouds. From somewhere in the dark woods behind the cemetery, an owl hooted. A prickly feeling crept down Miss Georgia’s spine. In the daytime, the cemetery was a peaceful, serene spot but at night, it was just plain spooky.

A cold hand touched her arm. Miss Georgia’s heart jumped into her throat. She whirled, too frightened to scream.

     “Georgia, it’s me,” whispered Abigail.

Miss Georgia swallowed twice before she found the air to speak. “Abby, what in the world? What are you doing here?”

“I could ask you the same thing,” Abigail murmured. “But, I reckon we’re both here to see if those lights Roe mentioned show up again.”

The sound of a motor disturbed the quiet and two dim lights bounced up to the cemetery gate. Both Miss Georgia and Abigail shrank back, watching as the dark shape of an automobile stopped and two men got out. Miss Georgia couldn’t see their faces. One of them carried a shovel and the other, a large sack.

The figures moved toward the back of the cemetery. Stopping beside a mound of earth, they started to dig.
