A Storm to Clear the Air

The air last night was oppressive, hot, humid. It was no fun to be outside. Then, from the north, the storm clouds came, closer and closer. A light rain began, then a shower. Lightning flashed. A huge crash of thunder sent Nemo running to me, looking wild-eyed. Wind battered trees and houses. But, it passed over. This morning, the sun shines serenely as if nothing had happened. Nature seems to say, “Who me? Why, I’d never lose my temper like that.” And, looking at the lovely day, who wouldn’t believe her?

Lots of things are running through my mind this morning and it’s hard to capture a thought long enough to make sense of it. I want to think positive thoughts, but after listening to the news, it’s hard. So, what do I do, just ignore what’s going on and believe that like that old song, everything will come round right? I hope!

Years ago, lynch mobs hanged many innocent people. Were they sorry afterward? Probably, many were. Why did they do such a horrible thing? They thought as a mob, that is to say, they didn’t think at all. This is mob thought, or mindlessly following a leader.

I think we should be careful with our language. We should think for ourselves before we speak. I hear a lot about hate groups and that grieves my heart.  There are real hate groups and there are groups that do not hate at all. Sometimes people are lumped as a hate group if they have a differing opinion. It seems to me that the persons pulling over the statue dedicated to the Confederate soldier, no particular man, just the soldiers in general, and shouting gleefully as they pulled him down and kicked him, were probably not using their brains to the best of their ability. They were having fun, thinking as a group, destroying property. Did they have honorable motives? This looked like hatred to me.

Just a couple of questions this morning: why is the statue of Lenin standing unmolested in Seattle? I really don’t know the answer, and I’m asking.

Here’s another question: If a foreign nation had come into this country and systematically eradicated every statue or memorial having to do with the Confederate States of America, would we be outraged? Or would we applaud and join the movement? Just a question.

Will we continue as a free nation after this storm is over? Will we learn of our history, the good and the bad, and determine in our hearts never to repeat the bad? Vacuums can’t exist for long. When one thing is gone, it is replaced with another. Have we considered what will replace the history of the War Between the States? How will the history books be re-written? These are scary times, as most storms are. All I can do is hang onto my anchor of faith and hope that reason and a belief in a benevolent God will carry us through.
