Outstanding

Outstanding

Today, I want to salute the common American citizen and suggest to you that he or she is anything but common and is, in fact, an outstanding example that many would do well to follow.

I salute the men and women who get up each day, go to a job, support a family, and do their best to live according to the laws of God and the nation of which they are citizens. I salute those retirees who still believe in right being right and wrong being wrong. I salute the young people who, among a throng of temptations and changing mores still stubbornly refuse to yield to peer pressure.

The ones who grab the headlines and spotlight are those who flaunt laws or say or do outlandish things; the movie stars, the rabble rousers, the rioters and looters. But, what about those who quietly go from day to day trying to make the world a little better, offering help to those who need it, believing in God and a divine law that still says right is right and wrong is wrong? They are the ones holding everything together.

On this day when we Americans get to exercise our right to vote, let’s also be thankful that we live in a nation that has been an example of freedom and hope for more than 200 years; a nation that has flaws but recognizes them and strives to remedy them.

Common? No, these are the backbone of America.
