Now’s the Time

Now’s the Time

Now’s the time to look around and enjoy those things close to home. We tend to hurry, to rush here and there, trying to meet appointments, and we’re busy, but, now? Now, much of this has come to a full stop. Here we are at home, in a rather small space, and, suddenly, we can see things that have been here all the time, things we just hadn’t noticed.

And, we can think. It seems silly that we haven’t had time to think, but with all the rushing, our thoughts tend to be scattered. So many responsibilities crowd into our brains at the same time. I remember what Scarlett O’Hara said in Gone with the Wind: I’ll think about that tomorrow. Guess what? Tomorrow is here. We can give our attention to the things that are close by, that have been here all the time and we just haven’t noticed.

For example, yesterday as I walked in the yard, I noticed the tiny wildflower, the bluet, is still with us, visible down among the grass close to the ground. And, buttercups! They are out now, their bright, shiny petals like drops of sunlight. We have time to hear things that we haven’t heard, see things we haven’t seen, and enjoy the world that is right under our noses.

No, we don’t like being confined. Freedom is a precious thing and not to be scoffed at, but, at the moment, for the good of others as well as ourselves, it’s best to center our world around that small place called home. No matter what, we can love our families and others, we can share what we have with those who need it, and we can enjoy the spot where God has placed us. Now’s the time.
