The Mystery of the Unknown Plant

The Mystery of the Unknown Plant

Yesterday, I said I would add to the mystery count by telling you about a mysterious plant. It was discovered in an unused field in Oklahoma. What could it be, I wondered, as I gazed at the fascinating features of huge trunk and wildly tangled limbs mixing with other bushes and underbrush.   20160821_115926 The limbs or vines, whichever they were, reminded me of the arms of a giant squid, or the writhing hair of Medusa. I’m telling you, that plant was strange!

Another interesting facet of the mystery plant was that wherever those limbs touched the ground, they made a new plant. I had visions of it traveling in this manner, until it took over the pasture, the town, the world! It was like a creature from outer space bent on colonizing earth.

However, one tell-tale clue pointed to its identity. High up on outstretched vines, nearly hidden by the leaves of surrounding trees, was fruit! Small, round, marble-sized, some green and some red. They looked like grapes! Wild grapes or ‘possum grapes, as we call them in Oklahoma. 20160821_120615Nobody is really sure this is what they are because nobody wants to be the first to taste them. Legend has it that ‘possum grapes are poison. Are they, really? I don’t know and I don’t believe I’m curious enough to find out.20160821_120550

Anyway, if you will take a look at these photos, noticing the circumference of the trunk where it comes out of the ground and the way it has closed off all possible entrance to an old cellar, I’ll appreciate it. I look forward to your opinions.20160821_115845 The leaves look like a grape-vine. The fruit looks like grapes, but nobody has ever seen a grape-vine grow this large. I’ve heard of grape-vine swings and, of course, they would have to be sturdy but this plant is on super vitamins. What do you think? Or should we add this to the list of unsolved mysteries?
